Learning goals for 2024

Last time I said I was going to write a post each month. Seems like I failed in that. Here’s shortly what I’m going to be learning (software related stuff) in 2024.

Accessibility

As the web progresses as a media for delivering fundamental services, it is becoming even more important that anyone has access to the web. It is also really easy to break accessibility of a website if you don’t know about accessibility requirements or are not paying attention. On this blog for example, I’m pretty sure that the current link color is not accessible.

I already started with this goal and got the Introduction to Accessibility certificate from W3C WAI initiative today! The course was an eye-opener into why accessibility is important. It’s really not about passing some standard, it’s more about equality and basic human rights in an increasingly digital world.

Data structures & algorithms

This is a subject I always feel like I should have paid more attention to while still in University. I did pass a course called data structures and algorithms. At the time I was unfortunately more focused on passing the course than thoroughly learning the subject.

But now when I’m no longer a student, I can take a course on the subject again, on my own terms. So this fall, I’m going to take a couple of courses on data structures and algorithms at University of Helsinki. I’m actually really looking forward to this, based on the course outline there’s going to be quite a few subjects I’ve wanted to learn about. Course is also taught in Python, so it’s going to be a nice refresher into the language.

Azure

It’s the last of the three big public clouds that I don’t have an associate level certificate with. This year that’s going to change. I’m going for the Azure Administrator Associate cert this time, and will maybe follow that up with a Developer Associate cert.

I’ve been watching a really good youtube video playlist titled Azure Master Class v2, and there’s lots of cool stuff in Azure. One thing that I’m considering is moving the blog into Azure Static Web Apps to gain some CDN capability for free and free myself from having a server running to host this site. Maybe my next post will be about that migration!
